Sometimes I feel like I’m looking at a Magic Eye poster when someone posts an engine bay picture. Maybe it’s because it’s a BMW or because I’m pretty inexperienced.

If it helps you any - that one’s missing a LOT of stuff required to run...

My dad was a mechanic so I know what it is and what it does. These are useless skills because I have to guess which one is causing the problems.

We didn’t even have cars when I was growing up. My dad took the bus to work.

Yeah. It’s just when someone posts a picture like that, and then says something like “I immediately noticed the problem”, I’m totally not seeing it. Normally I have to Google the problem I’m having and have people show me what I’m looking for.

All good. I live in downtown Chicago for about 5 years. Bus, train, or my feet for transportation.

Never be afraid to ask. You are among friends here.

Well you gotta start somewhere. Can you identify anything at all in this picture? To be fair, this one is missing a lot of parts at the moment.

yeah, i mean just like JustJim said, my dad is a mechanic I’ve been under hoods since I could stand and sometimes I don’t even know lol

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, the amazing part of OPPO is I’ve never seen someone say something like HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT YOU FOOOOOL. Everyone is supportive.

Yeah there’s a water bottle on the right. In all seriousness, just a couple things.

I appreciate the atmosphere around here. My area of expertise is IT, I’ve been trying to make a concerted effort to be more handy. So I like reading about the car repair stuff.

Just kidding, actually I spent a big part of my childhood in my dad’s shop too.there might be some kind of link between growing up with cars and liking cars when grown up... mysterious...

Nice, I dabble in IT with my crazy home network.

I do network administration with a side of security management. I’ve done desktop support prior. My desk at work currently had 11 Cisco switches and Routers on it pending deployment.

BMW M62 4.4 V8, either getting oil leaks repaired or vanos work done. If I had to guess :)

oooo fun

I’m in automotive advertising so I just dabble a bit at home.

My internal network is all at 1000mbps and I hard wired everything with cat6 cables. I have an 8 port switch running on top of my router and drives networked in with 3.0 USB.

I want to get a legit NAS set up with Raid at some point.

Recommendation for a cheap NAS (that works)?

It was all fun and games until my Cisco Catalyst 3560G that I had slated for a WiFi access point network location took a dump. Now I’m in the RMA process. Wouldn’t be a big deal but my access points need PoE.

I’ve been using Netgear Ready NAS. No problems yet.

I just borrowed the picture from Tavarish’s article, you nailed it on the engine. Apparently the problem was a bent valve. I wouldn’t have known if he didn’t say anything.

I liked cars due to video games. Started with Road and Track Presents Need for Speed.

Don’t worry. It takes years. And there will always be something you haven’t seen before. Plus, alot of parts take different forms in different cars. I’m guessing that black canister by the water bottle is a power steering reservoir, for example, but I’m not sure, because I haven’t seen one like that. You’ll get there. We’ll all get there.

I think it’s a LOT harder when you haven’t seen things come apart, and you’re presented with a single still image like that above. Viewing it in person, in 3 dimensions, it’s a lot easier to see what’s going on. It does help to have a basic understanding of the essential parts of a modern engine, from intake through exhaust. Overhead camshafts, timing chains, water pumps, belt drive, cylinder heads, fluid reservoirs, throttle bodies, alternator(turbo) etc. - once you’ve seen how a few are put together it gets a lot easier to identify similar parts on other engines. You can kind of follow the paths of each system. Spark, fuel, air. Except vacuum. Everything you see that makes no sense whatsoever, it’s probably vacuum.

I’d recognize the BMW-ness of it just for the power steering reservoir. But only because it’s the same as my E46.

I figured it’d be easier seeing it come apart than a pre exploded view. I am usually able to find those basic parts no problem but yeah.
